Mom Shoots 12 Yo Daughter with .22cal Thinking It Was a Novelty Firearm-style Lighter
Banning, Calif. A Banning woman accidentally shot her 12-year-old daughter after trying to light a cigarette with a gun, which she apparently thought was a novelty cigarette lighter.

Banning police say 30-year-old Rachel Avila and her daughter were in front of their mobile home when Avila grabbed what she thought was a novelty firearm-style lighter lying on the ground.

While the woman attempted to light her cigarette by pulling the trigger, a 22-caliber bullet flew out, ricocheted off the ground and struck her daughter in the arm.

The girl was treated and released for what authorities describe as a superficial wound.

Police say the weapon was a North American Arms .22-caliber, Derringer-style revolver.

Investigators are trying to figure out how the gun ended up on the ground.
