A model in the US has had her hand amputated after walking into a plane propeller.

Former Gossip Girl wardrobe assistant, part-time model and blogger Lauren Scruggs is in a critical condition after the accident that has also left her with severe head, facial and shoulder injuries.

According to reports, the 23-year-old was climbing out of a private plane when she walked into the propeller which was still spinning.

She was returning from a scenic flight around Texas taking in the Christmas lights.

"Following multiple surgeries, Lauren has received facial and shoulder reconstruction, as well as the loss of her hand. We are currently praying for healing on the left eye and brain," a family spokesperson posted on her official page on CaringBridge.org.

An investigation into why the propeller was still moving when she got off the plane is now being conducted.

"It appears that the pilot left the engine running at idle while she exited the plane to switch places with another passenger. That's one of the aspects of the investigation," a Federal Aviation Administrator told RadarOnline.com.

The pilot, who recently purchased the small two-seater plane, is believed to be one of her close friends.

Scruggs' style blog, LOLO which she established four months ago, most recently featured an Australian Vogue fashion editorial spread starring actress Isabel Lucas.

As well as editing the online magazine she also makes regular appearances in New York's social pages where she is snapped front row at international fashion events, including New York Fashion Week where she interviewed Twilight star Kellan Lutz.

Is there some regulation against allowing the occupants to exit the plane with the props still running?

They cant turn this around and blame it on the pilot..she walked infront of the plane. Besides think about how much noise that engine would be making, id stay away from it.
