Mineral Oil Burning After Blast

2,000 gallons of mineral oil burn after Entergy blast
By DALE LEZON

July 14, 2011, 12:20PM

More than 2,000 gallons of mineral oil contained in utility components caught fire after an explosion early this morning at an Entergy substation in southeast Montgomery County.

The explosion occurred at the facility on Calhoun Road near FM 1314 in Bennett Estates about 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

The blast apparently ignited a bank of 432 Static VAR Capacitors, which each contain five gallons of mineral oil. A total of 2,160 gallons of the oil is burning.

No PCPs are used at the substation. The burning oil is not dangerous to the surrounding community and no evacuations are ordered.

Customers have not lost power.

Fire officials say they have determined the best course of action is to let the blaze burn out.

The fire is contained within a fenced area and surrounded by gravel. Firefighters from Caney Creek and Needham fire departments are on the scene. The Woodlands Fire Department Haz-Mat team is monitoring the air quality.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality also is monitoring the fire.

Investigators have not determined what caused the blast and blaze.
