Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman — one of the world's most notorious crime figures — has escaped from a maximum security prison for the second time, Mexico's National Security Commission said Saturday night.

Guzman, who headed Mexico's powerful Sinaloa Cartel, was last seen using the shower area at the Altiplano prison around 8 p.m. Saturday, the commission said in a statement.

An alert was triggered when prison guards found his cell was empty. Flights were suspended at Toluca airport, near the penitentiary outside Mexico City, and a manhunt was being coordinated in the nearby states, the commission said.

One of history's most prolific drug lords, the 60-year-old spent 13 years on the run after escaping a Mexican prison in a laundry cart in 2001. Before his recapture in February 2014, he was wanted in six different U.S. courts for smuggling billions of dollars of cocaine, meth, heroin, and marijuana across the border.

It's Mexico. They don't even make the inmates wear jumpsuits or prison blues. Chapo probably just flew the coop cuz he finally got bored with running the place.

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has escaped through a 1.5-kilometer (1 mile) tunnel that opened into the shower area of his cell.

Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido tells a news conference Sunday that Guzman used an elaborate escape hatch built allegedly without the detection of authorities.

With his escape Guzman has done what Mexican authorities promised would not happen after his re-capture last year - to slip out of a maximum security prison for the second time.

Rubido says 18 employees from various part of the Altiplano prison 90 kilometers (56 miles) west of Mexico City have been taken in for questioning.

Guzman slipped out of the prison through a rectangular passage in the shower area of his cell that led to a nearly mile-long tunnel running underneath the prison.
Guzman was last seen inside the prison around 8 p.m. while receiving his daily dose of medication. After guards realized he had disappeared, they found the hatch that led by ladder down to the tunnel, which was illuminated, perforated with PVC piping for ventilation and equipped with adapted motorcycle-on-rails to whisk the drug lord to freedom.
