But instead of avoiding a clash with the raging bull, 64-year-old Gonzalez, who is known as ‘El Pana’ in his native country, is instead thrown in to the air before he comes crashing down on his head.

The notorious womanising bullfighter, who has eight children, has been left quadriplegic following the incident which took place in city of Ciudad Lerdo, in the north-central Mexican state of Durango this week.

Horrified officials are seen rushing to the grey-haired matador’s aid as he lies completely motionless in the ring.

Seconds later he is lifted and placed on a stretcher before been taken away in an ambulance.

Doctors are now conducting a number of operations but the level of spinal damage means he is unlikely to ever use any of his limbs again.

Doctor Galvan Zermeno said: “We have found symptoms that indicate a very serious injury to the spinal tissue.
“The diagnosis leads us to the conclusion of a possible quadriplegia, which means immobility in his whole body."

The paralysis was confirmed today by the medical team treating him.
Dr Zermeno added: ”It will be difficult to remedy the severe spinal damage caused by the fall, but it will facilitate his treatment and transfer."

Mr Gonzalez is a controversial figure in Mexico and is well known for his colourful attitude, his cigar smoking and his love of the ladies.

He has been involved in bullfighting for the past 37 years, during which he has earned popularity and respect with the public and earned a reputation as one of the most recognised matadors.

This is not the first time a matador has been seriously injured engaging in the sport which animal rights supporters have long campaigned against. In December, a matador was seriously injured by a bull after he was gored.

The bull's sharp horns penetrated Mauricio Martínez Kingston's chest, lungs and heart.

In latter-day bullfighting the animals are usually killed at the end of the fight over fears they will go on to attack.
