With or without a garbage disposal, no one should be putting grease down a sink. That can only end in disaster!! From the size of that mess, it looks like straight grease vs bits of greasy food.

On a side note, I had no idea that most British people do not have garbage disposals. I learned something new today!

I've never had a garbage disposal. I don't pour fats/oils down the drain because IT CLOGS THE SINK. It builds up in your pipes.

Scrape/pour that stuff into the trash, people.

We put it coffee cans or the refrigerator until trash day, although I believe you can buy containers to store your fat until then.

Let fair be fair here. While in my lifetime it's always been common sense not to pour fat or oil down a drain as well as feminine things, until recently, no baby wipe container has carried that label. Perhaps they've changed the formulation of these things as my daughters and my wife have used them forever without any plumbing problems. Suddenly they're stopping up home plumbing like an epidemic and the companies that perform auger services are working around the clock. That's only been happening in recent years. New sewerage plumbing is getting plugged up within a year after never having a single problem for the past 25-30 somehow indicates that something's changed. Only during the last few years there is any warning and it's usually a small international symbol of a toilet seat with a circle and a slash mark rather then a formal warning.
