Re: Man Tries Really Hard To Smuggle 94 IPhones Into China, Still Fails
Initial estimates place the value of the phones seized (5S' & some 6's) at more than $48,000 USD. The average wage of someone who actually builds those devices (Pegatron, in Shanghai) can be less than $300 a month. (Source: China Labor Watch - 2013), so at minimum this haul would equal or 13 YEARS salary... And although the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been available in China since October, the prices was as high as $3,000 on the black market for the brief period when they weren’t officially on sale in the country. Despite greater availability of the iPhone in China, smuggling is still an attractive option, since the country levies a 17 percent VAT to goods imported legally and iPhones are often priced lower in Hong Kong. They'll probably execute him... |
