Man Tried To Set Wife On Fire But Set Himself On Fire Instead
A man who allegedly tried to kill his ex-wife by setting her on fire mistakenly turned himself into a human torch.
Matthew Wong has been left fighting for his life after his attempted murder plot went disastrously wrong in Florida.
The 50-year-old had chased his estranged wife Gloria Davis across an apartment complex car park with a 2 1/2 gallon container of gasoline.
As he tossed the liquid at his wife it splashed all over his clothes.
When he set fire to bushes outside a flat where his wife was taking refuge he went up in flames.
Wong was heard shouting:'I'm gonna kill you' before his clothes caught fire.
Neighbours found Wong rolling on the ground in agony and helped beat out the flames with blankets.
He was rushed to Tampa General Hospital where he remains in a critical condition with third degree burns.
Police said Wong had been waiting for his estranged 47-year-old wife to leave her home in the Countrywood Apartments in Tampa, Florida, to drive to work.
As she stepped out of building is alleged to have chased after her tossing the flammable liquid over her.
Neighbours hearing screams directed the mother-of-two to take refuge in their flat.
Capitola Scott said she had to physically pull a frantic Davis up the stairs into her home to safety.
'I had to bring her up because she kind of fell. She was so hysterical, so I grabbed her to bring her on up here,' said Scott
Police spokesman Larry McKinnon said Wong decided to set fire to the building where his wife was hiding and ignite some bushes near the building.
'It was like instantly,' said neighbor Amy Jo Akert. 'Literally, he was instantly engulfed in flames.'
Wong's motives for attacking his wife were not immediately clear, McKinnon said.
'(He) was waiting for her to actually come out for work and ambush her with a Clorox bottle full of gasoline. It appears he was either going to light her on fire here or he was going to try to abduct her,' said McKinnon.
Police said the couple have been separated since October, when Davis moved out of their Wesley Chapel home and into the Countrywood Apartments.
The couple's two sons, aged 25 and 18, refused to comment.
Police said Wong will face charges.
