Man Survives 6 Days, Trapped In Car Wreck On Top Of Dead Friend
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/1...ref=weird-news A Colorado man survived nearly a week in the mountains without food or water when he was trapped in a car wreck, laying on top of his dead friend. Richard Koester, 36, was riding in the car with his friend Ronald Lee Mohr, 59, on a trip to Cripple Creek when Mohr, who was driving, suffered a medical emergency that caused their truck to roll off the highway and into a 30-foot ravine. Mohr was killed in the crash and Koester survived, but found he couldn't move. “I was laying on top of him the whole six days and nights. I had no idea he was with me when I woke up,” Koester told ABC. “That and a couple of other things kept me alive. He kept me a little warmer for a few extra days.” Koester told 9News that one of the last things he remembered before the crash on Oct. 11, was wishing his daughter a happy early 13th birthday and asking her to stay awake for his phone call around midnight, on her actual birthday. "I don't remember too much," Koester told 9News. "I remember waking up thinking I was in a dream." Koester was rescued after a lucky discovery by a state transportation official on Oct. 17, and a doctor later told him that his body temperature was only 79 degrees when he was brought to the hospital (according to the National Institute of Health, the average body temperature is about 98 degrees). The accident cost him both of his legs, some fingers and he's had to undergo at least five surgeries. His mother has told media outlets that Koester now has two birthdays -- the day he was born, and the day he was rescued. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/colo...-food-21067561 <object id="flashObj" width="480" height="270" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,47,0"><param name="movie" value="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="flashVars" value="videoId=2883331559001&playerID=168595655300 1&playerKey=AQ~~,AAAABvaL9Hk~,mLC66bU8hPOBGO8BPO1c oBAeF5n-gkxo&domain=embed&dynamicStreaming=true" /><param name="base" value="http://admin.brightcove.com" /><param name="seamlesstabbing" value="false" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="swLiveConnect" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed src="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" flashVars="videoId=2883331559001&playerID=16859565 53001&playerKey=AQ~~,AAAABvaL9Hk~,mLC66bU8hPOBGO8B PO1coBAeF5n-gkxo&domain=embed&dynamicStreaming=true" base="http://admin.brightcove.com" name="flashObj" width="480" height="270" seamlesstabbing="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" swLiveConnect="true" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"></embed></object> |

The maggots provide food, some water and the decomposition process can provide some heat. The smell, though... |

regarding "the smell" -- Cripple Creek is fairly high in the Rockies and this occurred in October. My guess is that the temps were under frozen during the night and probably not over 50 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, unless in sunlight, which is not likely if you've fallen down into a ravine. You're probably in shadow of the hillside or maybe evergreen trees. In those cooler temps -- not much smell. He might have not even been aware of the smell, if there was any. He prob stunk of his own bodily fluids more than anything. That and being more worried about getting eaten by mountain cat or wolf? |

His dead friend served as a mattress. Better than his dead friend being on top because of the dripping ooze. I'm looking at it like a "half glass full" kinda way.
