An Israeli man has petitioned the Haifa Magistrate’s Court for a restraining order against God, claiming the Almighty has been particularly unkind to him.

The initiator of the request, a resident of the northern port city, represented himself in court, the Walla news site reported on Wednesday.

A protocol of the hearing noted that God did not turn up for the session, although it did not specify how the court determined the Omnipresent was not in fact there, as opposed to merely exercising the right to remain silent.


The petitioner, who was not named in the report, noted that he had tried to obtain the restraining order from police for the past three years but that police had merely sent a patrol car to his home on 10 occasions.

He argued that over a three-year period God, had exhibited a seriously negative attitude toward him, although details of just what divine mischief he had borne the brunt of were not mentioned in the report.

Presiding Judge Ahsan Canaan denied the request, which he said was ludicrous, asserting the applicant needed help not from the court but rather from other sources.

The report did not include a response on the outcome from any of the multitude of available spokespeople on behalf of the Lord.

Why has it taken so long for it to be figured out that he needed some help, mentally? I thought the police had a duty of safeguarding for people they have suspicions of being mentally unwell? He should have been taken to the hospital the first time he called the police.

This isn’t the first time that a disgruntled member of the public has attempted to haul God before the courts.

In 2005 a Romanian prisoner serving a 20 year stretch for murder tried to sue the Romanian Orthodox Church claiming that they were God’s representatives in Romania. Pavel Mircea argued that God had failed to keep the Devil away from him, and somewhat ingeniously suggested that his baptism was a binding contract between him and the man up high. As result, he argued, there had been a breach.

Like Shoshan, Mircea was unsuccessful and God’s record in the courts remains untarnished for now.

What gets all the news and legal sources amused is how the court documented God wasn't there.

Good on him. God ain't been to kind to me either and as far as I see most other people. I support the lawsuit and wish the man nothing but the best!

Now how exactly can a restraining order be implemented against an Omnipotent and Omniscient being?

What Judiciary will have the balls...or is willing to lose said balls....to actually sign this order???
