Man Safe, No Other Victims Found After Car Goes into Suburban Lake

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...0,361310.story

A disoriented man whose car went into a pond in southwest suburban Richton Park this afternoon was able to get to shore safely on his own and falsely told firefighters his wife and child were in the submerged car, officials said.

Someone called 911 about 2:25 p.m. to alert emergency crews that a car had gone into Lake George, near Cicero Avenue and Sauk Trail, Richton Park Fire Chief Rodney Wilson told WGN-TV. The man, 59, who lives near the lake, was able to get out of the car on his own and was being treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment, officials said.

When crews arrived soon after the call, the man started “hollering” that his wife and child were trapped in the car, Wilson said. Divers checked the car, which was submerged with its roof a few inches below the surface of the lake, and found no one in the car or in the surrounding water.

When the man got to shore, he appeared disoriented and became combative with police and fire crews, hitting one fireman, and had to be restrained before he was taken to the hospital, Wilson said.

The man was unable to give a statement to police about what happened, and police are investigating the incident, according to a news release.

This happened right by the subdivision I grew up in. I happened to be visiting a friend who still lives there when this happened. We noticed a helicopter hovering near her house. There were two at one point. We didn't see the guy drive in or get pulled out or anything.

I haven't seen any updates yet. He could have a mental problem or been on drugs or something.

Or both

This makes me think of a scene in 'SLC Punk' when the character, Marc, tries to dump a stolen car in the Great Salt Lake and then goes ballistic when it doesn't sink
