Paul Estridge Jr.’s family first heard the sirens.

Then came the crime scene tape outside their Westfield neighbor’s home.

The family’s worries would later turn to horror.

Marylyn Erb, 52, and Kelley Erb, 23, were killed, and a probable cause affidavit released Friday gave a ghastly reason why: Christian Rene Haley, 20, was upset because his former boss — Marylyn’s husband and Kelley’s father — had fired him months earlier from a landscaping business.

The bodies of the two women were found in a pool of blood in the basement, the affidavit said, their heads bludgeoned.

“We were horrified,” said Estridge Jr., an Indianapolis area home builder and a longtime friend of the Erbs. “We just couldn’t believe it.”

He called the killings “senseless.”

Haley, who was arrested Thursday, is facing charges of murder, felony murder, robbery, burglary and theft. The slayings occurred Dec. 20 in the 15000 block of Oak Park Court.

Haley told a friend that he was angry over his June firing by Todd Erb, the affidavit said. Haley worked at Sundown Gardens for three months and told police he was fired for attendance problems.

Haley, the affidavit said, told the friend that he “bashed” the women’s “heads in with some cement or something.”

Authorities said Haley stole white pearl earrings, an iPhone 5, a gold-colored chain and two Chase cards belonging to the Erbs. Haley gave the cards to a friend, who told police he used them at Crown Liquors and a CVS, the affidavit said.

Westfield police released video surveillance of that individual Sunday. A person who called Crime Stoppers also told police he had heard the individual say that he was upset about Haley killing the Westfield family, the affidavit said. The Indianapolis Star is withholding the individual’s identity because he has not been charged with a crime.

The individual told police that after he used the cards, Haley indicated he had killed the Erbs, the affidavit said. Whether Haley could be taken seriously was unclear, the individual told police, because Haley was laughing. Haley also had talked about robbing the Erbs with a gun, the affidavit said.

Police think the Erbs were killed between noon and 1 p.m. A person delivering flowers saw someone moving inside the home and a dog barking. No one answered the door.

Todd Erb told police he was having lunch during that time and when he returned home from the Sundown Gardens office around 4:30 p.m. he found the bodies of his wife and daughter.

Estridge said he has known the Erbs for more than 30 years. He described Marylyn and Kelley as the “sweetest, kindest and most giving people” he knew.

Marylyn, Estridge said, once reached out to a neighbor who was grieving her son’s death and was about to send another one off to college.

“Marylyn came by just to be with her. She spent the day with her,” Estridge said. “That’s the kind of thing she would do.”

One thing I recommend to friends smarting from a recent job loss, next time you are hired by a company, do your fucking job right. That means show up for work on time & on schedule and, amazingly, your chances of getting fired drop dramatically.
He must suffer from some type of paranoid delusion to brag about it to a friend. This was just pathetic.

We have the death penalty, and a federal penitentiary. So either the state will kill you, or the feds will kill you here. I don't believe in executing people hastily when there is still a reasonable doubt, or other evidence to consider, etc. But when it's clear that you maliciously, willfully did something like this?
