Vandals target home of Sheffield family who kept man as slave

Vandals last night struck at the home of a Sheffield family who treated a man with learning difficulties as their slave.

The house of jailed David Rooke, wife Donna and their son Jamie on Halifax Road, Parson Cross, was targeted at around 8.45pm last night.

Windows of the home where they beat vulnerable victim Craig Kinsella, forcing him to live in a garage and work 15 hours a day unpaid, have been smashed.

An ice cream van belonging to the family was also apparently targeted and police officers were at the scene this morning.

One Ecclesfield resident said: “I was driving past on my way to work and saw the house had been vandalised overnight.

“It’s all boarded up and the ice cream van is smashed, there were police everywhere.”

Another reader said cars outside the property had also been targeted.

A police spokesman said: “Police were called to an incident of criminal damage at a property on Halifax Road, Sheffield, at around 8.45pm on Tuesday January 7.

“The windows at the front of the property had been smashed.

“Police are making enquiries in relation to the incident.”

Harrowing CCTV footage showing the family attacking Mr Kinsella was played to Sheffield Crown Court yesterday - and was described by Judge Peter Kelson as ‘horrific’.

Officers were called to the property on July 7 after a neighbour was confronted by Jamie Rooke wielding a knife.

Mr Kinsella was found battered and bruised, with a broken right arm, fractured rib, extreme bruising to his back and around his kidney, a fractured chin and cuts and lumps and bruises on his head and legs.

David Rooke, aged 44, was jailed for six-and-a-half years after admitting false imprisonment and five counts of causing actual bodily harm. He was also ordered to pay Mr Kinsella £15,000 in compensation.

Jamie Rooke, 19, admitted affray and four counts of causing actual bodily harm and was jailed for four years.

Donna Rooke, 40, admitted a specimen count of battery and was jailed for four months.

I may be wrong but in the U.S. I don't think they allow those with "learning difficulties" to have guns.

There's a spectrum. You can't be 'visibly' retarded and own a gun, but if you're an undiagnosed raving maniac bent on a homicidal rampage, it's pretty easy to get a gun
