Man Hits Child with Car, Beaten/Robbed when Stops to Help
WJBK - Surveillance video obtained by FOX 2 shows the moments leading up to the attack on a driver who had stopped to help a child he had accidentally just hit with his car. Police say Steve Utash was driving near Morang Drive and Balfour Road about 4:10 p.m. Wednesday when a 10-year-old boy stepped off the curb, into the path of his vehicle. Utash stopped immediately to check on the boy, but was quickly met by a crowd of 10 - 12 people who gather around him and proceeded to beat him. The driver's wallet and other belongings were also stolen and he was left unconscious at the scene. The boy is recovering, but Utash remains in the hospital in an induced coma. In the video, you can see a group of four people standing by the side of the road. One of the people, known to be 10-year-old David Harris, appears to step down into the street and is quickly knocked over to the ground as a truck drives by. The three other people he was with walk to him, and you can see multiple people at the gas station look over and make their way to the boy. A crowd of people then make their way over to the scene but it is unclear who is exactly is involved in the attack and who is an onlooker. Mayor Mike Duggan and Council President Brenda Jones called the incident "brutal" and "senseless" in a statement released Friday. They also ask for calm and patience during the investigation. The full statement reads: "Earlier this week, a traffic accident that injured a young boy, David Harris, escalated into a vicious attack on the driver of the vehicle, Steve Utash, who had done the right thing by stopping to check on the boy. This senseless vigilante attack is not the essence of who we are as Detroiters and will not be tolerated. We are asking all Metro Detroiters to demonstrate our true character by exercising calm and patience during this emotionally charged time. Most important, we must all keep Mr. Utash, David Harris and their families in our prayers. We also are calling on members of our community who know the individuals involved in this brutal attack to step forward so that justice can be served and healing can begin." Police are asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspects to speak up. video |
