Man Does C-Section on Dead Porcupine, Saves Baby

March 30, 2014

LISBON, Maine (AP) — A Maine man in search of a valuable mineral cut open a dead porcupine on the side of the road and unexpectedly pulled out its baby.

Jared Buzzell, of Lisbon, says he was searching for wild mushrooms Thursday when he saw a porcupine get hit by a car in Minot. Buzzell says he'd heard that a valuable mineral deposit used in Chinese medicine formed in the stomachs of porcupines.

He then cut open the dead porcupine to search for the mineral and instead found the baby.

He tells WMTW-TV he cut the umbilical cord and thought the baby porcupine was dead until he started massaging it and it began breathing.

Buzzell is caring for the baby at home and plans to give it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

That is quite heartwarming. I am glad the baby porcupine lived.

You're welcome diamondsmiles. His wife already doesn't want to give him up, the little guy IS adorable! Fortunately he has come to the attention of the authorities and the gentleman only has a couple days to turn him over to a wildlife agency so he can be rehabbed and set free eventually.

Damn! He's doing well there!

The tagging won't work for me. I just tried again.

Re: Man Does C-Section on Dead Porcupine, Saves Baby

The porcupine had only been with the family for two days when the video hit the media and made the news. Eventually those soft quills will be hard quills and while porcupines don't "shoot" them as people think they do, they are loose and have a little barb at the end of each one, so it's easy to be stuck, and very painful to remove. It would really go better for the little guy if he was able to live his life normally out there in the wild like other porcupines.

Tagging? As in putting someone's name in like this, diamondsmiles? All you have to do is type @ and then type the name directly after with no space inbetween.

Yes. I know that, but, it is not working today. I haven't tried anyone else. Maybe it's just you!

I even tried copying your name from the posts.

I'd love to have the baby porcupine's fingernails! Mine suck anymore!
