A Chinese man is in critical condition after being hit by a woman who fell five stories at a shopping centre in southern China.

The woman was dead when emergency services arrived at the scene, China's Northeast News reports, although it is not yet known whether she jumped, fell, or was pushed to her death.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang, before crowds rushed to the scene.

The man, a 42-year-old identified by police as Mr Yu, had been shopping with his three-year-old son who narrowly avoided injury.

Yu sustained multiple fractures and was taken to the intensive care unit at the Hunan Provincial People's Hospital.
