Man Arrested with Two Handguns at Euro Disney

"A man has been arrested with two firearms at an entrance to a hotel at Disneyland Paris, French media report.
The 28-year-old is not known to security services and gave no resistance when he was detained, according to the reports.
Police sources said the man was also found with a copy of the Koran. He was stopped during a security check.
France remains in a state of emergency following the deadly Islamist attacks in Paris in November last year.

Update-

Anti-terrorist officers were today interviewing a man found with two automatic weapons at Disneyland Paris, as police hunt his female companion.

The 28-year-old, who has not been named, was initially stopped by security guards as he tried to get into the New York hotel at the theme park.

X-rays then revealed that he had the two guns in his rucksack, together with a box of 20 bullets and a small copy of the Koran translated into French.

A woman thought to be his companion was later arrested, but it turned out to be the wrong person

A police source said: "A woman was arrested soon after the incident, but she was released after it became clear she was not the suspect involved.

"We are still looking for the man’s companion."

A second weapon – thought to be a knife – was also found in the rucksack, the source added.

The couple are said to be ‘of white European appearance,’ said a hotel source.

Security sources confirmed the man was a French national who lives in the 14th arrondissement of Paris.

"Anti-terrorist officers were called and he was immediately taken into custody," said a source at Disneyland Paris, which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in France.

Situated 20 miles to the east of Paris, it attracts some 14 million visitors every year, including many from Britain

"The man was with his wife or girlfriend, and she is also being spoken to," the source added. "It appears that he was not known to the security services.

"He is thought to be from the Paris area. The police are trying to work out what his intentions were, and if they were linked to terrorism."

It later emerged the man was only known to police due to a minor parking offence.

Le Parisien claims the man told interrogators he feared for his safety and was carrying the guns, which date to the 1980s, to protect himself.

Disneyland has been the subject of constant threats from radical Islamist groups in recent years, and especially during the recent terrorist attacks which saw 147 people murdered across the city in 2015.

slamic State and al-Qaeda in Yemen claimed responsibility for the atrocities, which were carried out by French and Belgium born nationals.

Most ended up being killed by police themselves, or blowing themselves up with explosives.

Police confirmed that the man had been placed under formal criminal investigation, and was being held "at a police station in the Paris area".

His case has been passed to the local prosecutor and he may face formal charges.

The Prefect of Seine-et-Marne, Jean-Luc Marx, told local media: "I know that the Disney security services immediately reacted to make sure he was not a danger, we don't know if he had the intention to cause harm."

Disneyland Paris remained closed for a short period in the wake of the November terrorist attacks in the French capital

A State of Emergency is still in force across France, with the government warning that further attacks are ‘very likely’.

The French airforce is currently involved in bombing raids on IS positions in Syria, and has pledged to destroy the organisation.

In January last year the Sequoia Lodge Hotel at Disneyland Paris was briefly evacuated following a security incident, which turned out to be a false alarm

precaution a number of guests were taken into the hotel car park as is usual resort procedure," a spokesman said at the time.

French President Francois Hollande has warned people to remain vigilant in the wake of the brutal attack on Charlie Hebdo magazine in January last year, and on other sites around the city in November.

Many of them were ‘soft’ targets, including bars, restaurants, a concert venue and the national sports stadium, the Stade de France.

Re: Man Arrested with Two Handguns at Euro Disney

He reportedly told officers that he was in the process of moving house away from Paris and had stored most of belongings at his mum’s house temporarily.

But, according to Europe1, his mum refused to keep his two guns under her roof, forcing the man to take them with him to Disneyland, where he planned to have a break with his girlfriend.

Europe1 said his girlfriend who fled the scene before being arrested at her home, backed up the man’s story.

And police do not believe he was planning any kind of attack.

“In view of the initial elements of the investigation, we are moving away from the idea of an attack," a police source told Reuters news agency.

According to a source close to the investigation, the suspect was the joint manager of a brasserie in Paris's 14tharrondissement.

Staff and regulars there expressed astonishment at his arrest.

So far the investigation has not revealed that the man had any criminal plot in mind, meaning he could be looking at a charge of transporting and owning illegal weapons, rather than any terror related offences.

However police searches will continue and the fact the Koran was in the bag alongside the guns, still concerns investigators, who haven’t revealed the man’s explanation.

Perhaps if he’d left it with his mother, France wouldn’t have had its latest in a long list of terror scares.

don't be an oswald..... a couple of illegal guns found in a bag doesn't mean gun control doesn't work...it's not the same as 50000 gun related incidents a year

Re: Man Arrested with Two Handguns at Euro Disney

A man found with guns in a Disneyland Paris hotel was on Tuesday condemned by a French court to six months' house arrest and made to wear an electronic tagging bracelet.

Prosecutors had sought a nine-month suspended sentence for the 28-year-old who was found to be carrying two handguns, ammunition and a Koran when he was arrested last Thursday.

Disneyland Paris said the guns were picked up by routine scanning of the man's bags at the hotel entrance.

A police source said at the time of the arrest that preliminary investigations did not point to terrorism, and that the man had said he was carrying the guns because he feared for his safety.

The Paris restaurant worker, a convert to Islam, will spend his sentence at his mother's house in the Loiret region southwest of Paris.

The court in the city of Meaux, east of the French capital, also banned him from carrying firearms for five years.

The defendant, with long hair in a bun and a short beard, told the court that he had bought his first gun to defend himself after being the victim of an act of aggression

He added that he had acquired the second pistol after the November 13 jihadist attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead.

Described as 'a boy with a big heart' by his girlfriend and a 'pathological liar' by the judge, the man told the court that had not wanted to leave his firearms at his mother's home where he was living.

Despite the discovery of the guns and the Koran, and after several Islamist attacks in and around Paris last year, investigators had quickly ruled out the possibility that the defendant had been planning a terror attack.

Prior to this case the defendant's only brush with the law had been for a traffic case.
