A man who sprayed sunscreen on his chest and back to prevent sunburn found himself, "engulfed in flames." Brett Sigworth was probably too frightened to appreciate the irony, but it's not lost on us what a spectacular failure the Banana Boat aerosol spray was at protecting his skin.

The fire spread only to areas of his body on which he'd applied the sunblock before he approached his charcoal barbecue grill. Sigworth has hired an attorney to approach the company about putting a detailed warning on the product if the sunscreen is indeed to blame. (Maybe another catchy jingle about getting on the "Banana Boat," but this time staying off the "Banana Ambulance"?)

Here is another story:

Most everyone knows about the warning on aerosol cans that advise against using the product near an open flame or heat. Brett Sigworth was aware of these warnings, but he still caught fire after spraying on sunscreen and then moving toward his charcoal grill.

Sigworth of Stow, Mass., says he was far from the grill when he sprayed on the Banana Boat lotion and rubbed it in. He also says that the can doesn’t mention anything about a risk of becoming flammable after applying the product completely.

The CBS affiliate WBZ-TV reports Sigworth suffered second degree burns anywhere he had applied the lotion. Sigworth said, “I sprayed on the spray-on sunscreen, and then rubbed it on for a few seconds. I walked over to my grill, took one of the holders to move some of the charcoal briquettes around and all of a sudden it went up my arm.”

WBZ more specifically notes the warning on the spray lotion states “flammable, don’t use near heat, flame or while burning.” But Sigworth did not think this warning applied to after the product had been rubbed onto ones skin.

After catching on fire, Sigworth told WBZ his friends and girlfriend helped snuff him out, which doctors say helped lessen the degree of his injury.

Sigworth has an attorney, but he is not suing Banana Boat. He simply wants to know why more testing wasn’t done on the product in this manner and would like to see more warnings on the canister.

if its in an aerosol can more then likely it will have something in it to make it flammable. hmm, now i want to find my can of it and see if it has a flame warning on it.

I'm a dipshit and didn't see that it was aerosol. Yeah, he's a dumb shit. I didn't even know sunscreen came in an aerosol form.

LOL @ anyone who goes near flames right after/while using or holding an aerosol can. he's lucky the can itself didn't explode in his face. I hope he learned his lesson.

I just saw the guy on the news. I'll see if I can find the video of him.

Video and additional photo added, along with another story about the incident.

What a pansy, his burns are no worse than a 2nd degree sunburn! If the dumbass sues the company, I hope he loses horridly.

The can had a warning on the label, but, he missed it because it didn't read, "Hey, fuck head!"
