Madam That Inspired Movie Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Dead
LA GRANGE, TX (KTRK) -- The last madam of the infamous Texas brothel that inspired the movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" has died in Phoenix. She was 84. Edna Milton Chadwell, who was the last madam of the brothel, died in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, her niece, Geralyn Kleffman, confirmed for Eyewitness News. Chadwell's nephew, Robert Kleffman, said his aunt had been in the hospital since a car accident in October. Kleffman says Chadwell began working at the Chicken Ranch in 1952. About three years later, Chadwell became the manager. In 1962, she bought the establishment from Jessie Williams, commonly known as Miss Jessie, and ran it until it was shut down in 1973. Marvin Zindler, who was the Eyewitness News Action13 Consumer reporter until his passing in 2007, made local and national headlines when he closed down the infamous and legendary "Chicken Ranch" of prostitution in LaGrange, Texas. The story was so spectacular it was featured in two 1974 issues of Playboy magazine. As a result, became a hit Broadway musical and movie called "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." Chadwell did not like the movie that made the Chicken Ranch famous, saying the only truth in it was that there was whorehouse in the town. |
