MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Some members of the U.S. military were busy in Miami Thursday night as they conducted exercises in Downtown Miami.

CBS4 captured video of Black Hawk helicopters flying over the city as part of a joint military training exercise.

Thursday night’s training took place near the Stephen P. Clark Center in Miami and a nearby Metrorail station where troops could be seen rappelling from the military choppers onto the Metrorail station platform.

The training is designed to ensure that military personnel are able to operate in urban areas and to focus on preparations for overseas deployment. It also serves as a mandatory training certification requirement.

A similar operation took place in April 2011 in Miami’s Brickell area, which frightened many residents in the area.

This time, the training operations were held away from residential areas, but MAYBE a warning to the population would have been a good idea.

They never will. 160 flys ops with SEAL teams and other SF in coordination with FBI HRT all the time in Chicago, LA, San Diego, San Antonio and New York. Do you expect them to tell everyone with a government ID what's going on? Local law enforcement is told the basics of a training op in their city. In reality, it's a setting similar to a city overseas. Pretty common if you care to research.

There is absolutely no legitimate reason for them to fire their weapons. Blanks or not.

They have plenty of training areas where they become very familiar with their weapons and know exactly how they perform.

The use of an automatic weapon under these circumstances boggles the mind.

You expect some of the most well trained operators of surgical violence to sit at training sites that stay static? They go out into cities to train for the real thing, not to test the weapon's handling. An enviroment that is always adapting. People come out to investigate, just like the people in the real op will do. What you don't realize is that these exercises are usually the last tier of training before the real deal, and real bullets. They want it as real as possible, yelling "bang bang" doesn't have the same result.
