FLORENCE, AZ - Pinal County authorities say a jail inmate attacked a detention officer because he didn't want to be released, fearing he'd be killed by drug cartels.

According to a Pinal County Sheriff's Office news release, Alexandro Guerrero, 26, of Yuma, had been ordered released from custody from the Pinal County Adult after serving a sentence for a warrant out of Yuma.

While waiting to be released, Guerrero allegedly attacked a Pinal County Sherriff's Office detention officer without any type of provocation, officials said.

Authorities say the officer had no time to react to the attack and once Guerrero was knocked to the ground he continued to kick and punch the officer.

Guerrero was eventually restrained in handcuffs.

Authorities said when asked why he attacked the officer, Guerrero said he was afraid the drug cartels were going to kill him. He reportedly explained he used to sell drugs on his own to make money and then went to work for a drug cartel in Mexico called "Los Zetas."

Guerrero reportedly told officials he was at some point labeled a "snitch" by the cartel because he was giving information on the cartel to law enforcement and that a "hit" had been put out on him.

Guerrero said he didn't want to be released from jail, so he assaulted the officer.

He was booked back into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center on three counts of aggravated assault on an detention officer, and is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.

Authorities said the detention officer received a broken nose and had have stitches to close a wound on his face caused by the attack.

"The ripple effect and impact of Mexican Drug Cartels are felt within our Jails," Sheriff Paul Babeu said in the news release. "Our Deputies and Detention Officers already have a very difficult job and it is made tougher by the impact of drug and human smuggling."

thanks for the video mrh2008. jesus christ how many correctional officers does it take to get one inmate cuffed? if they wanted to punish the inmate, they would have made sure his release was mentioned in local newspapers and on the internet and then booted his ass out the door. instead they rewarded his bad behavior by giving him what he wanted. of course if they arrest a zeta, they can always put them in the same cell. snitches belong in ditches.
