The family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler have revealed the harrowing details of her final hours after her killer Levi Bellfield finally confessed to the crime.

More than a decade after their daughter's death, Milly's parents Bob and Sally Dowler were told by police that the 13-year-old was raped in broad daylight, held for 14 hours and tortured before being strangled to death.

The family said they hoped her 'soul, at long last, can finally rest in peace' now that the serial killer has given his account.

The family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler have spoken out over their 'torment and pain' after her killer Levi Bellfield (right) finally gave harrowing details of his crimes.

The family's statement says: 'Bellfield told the police that after abducting Milly and assaulting her at his flat a few yards from Walton Station, he then drove her to his Mother's house. He reversed down a long driveway and then raped her in broad daylight over the boot of his car.

'Bellfield then moved her to another location, where the rape and torture continued for a number of hours, until the next day when he finally strangled her to death.'

Milly was snatched from the street while on her way from school to her home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002.


Her body was found in a wood in Yateley Heath, Hampshire - 25 miles from Walton-on-Thames.

Bellfield, 47, who now calls himself Yusuf Rahim, was given a whole-life prison sentence in June 2011 for the brutal slaughter of the teenager, but only admitted killing her four years later.

Bellfield only confessed when an investigation was launched in to whether he had an accomplice, after he bragged to a fellow prison inmate about his crime.

It emerged today that he would only speak to female officers from Surrey Police when he decided to confess and gave them disturbing details of how he repeatedly raped, tortured and murdered Milly.

Milly's family were told not to tell anyone about the information they had been given due to an investigation into a possible accomplice.

Milly's family's statement continued: 'Hearing Bellfield's account of how Milly spent her final hours before being murdered was shocking enough, but the news that there could have been another individual involved was devastating.

'There are no words to describe the additional torment and pain we have been going through since we were told this information.'

Last month Surrey Police said they had arrested a man in his 40s, but the suspect was released without charge after just 10 hours because there was no evidence.

The family added: 'We had to remain silent for eight months whilst the police conducted their investigation. Finally, when they made the arrest of the suspected accomplice, the person was questioned and released without charge in less than 10 hours as there was no evidence found.

'The pressure this has put us under as a family has been unimaginable and has taken its toll on all of us. We have had to fight every step of the way to get this far.'

A spokesman for Surrey Police said today: 'The force has been in regular contact with the Dowler family during this investigation into the circumstances surrounding Milly’s murder.

'We recognise this continues to be extremely distressing and our thoughts remain with them. '

At the time of his conviction for Milly's killing, Bellfield was already in jail for the murders of Amelie Delagrange and Marsha McDonnell and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.

In 2008 he had been given a whole-life term for murdering Ms McDonnell, 19, in 2003, and murdering Ms Delagrange, 22, and attempting to murder Ms Sheedy, 18, in 2004.

The judge at his trial over Milly's murder described Bellfield as a 'cruel and pitiless killer'. After he had been convicted of Milly's murder Bellfield yawned as he was led from court.

Police are now looking into a number of other crimes in the wake of his shock confession. Bellfield is already suspected of several other attacks.

At the time of his conviction in June 2011, detectives said they believed Bellfield may have been responsible for around 20 attacks on women which were never solved.

These included the killing of Judith Gold, who was hit over the head in Hampstead, north London, in 1990, and Bellfield's schoolfriend Patsy Morris, 14, who was strangled on Hounslow Heath, west London, in 1980.

Anna Maria Rennie identified Bellfield as the man who tried to force her in to a car in Whitton, west of London, when she was just 17 in October 2001. But the jury at Bellfield's 2008 trial for the murders of two other women could not agree and the charge was left on file.

Attempts for a retrial for attempted kidnap failed when Miss Rennie refused to attend court.

The full statement released by the family reads: 'We feel we need to say something in addition to the information that has already been made public, as we do not think what has been revealed reflects the true heinousness of this man.

'In May 2015 - nearly nine months ago - we were informed that Bellfield had requested to speak to Surrey Police about Milly. Bellfield made it clear to police that he would only speak to female police officers.

'Bellfield provided the officers with a harrowing account of Milly's final 14 hours. Giving details of her abduction, repeated rape, torture and then finally how he murdered her.

'The reason we were told this information last May, was because previously Bellfield had shared the information with other prison inmates and one of them was due to be released. This meant there was a risk that this information could be made public without us knowing about it.

'Bellfield told the police that after abducting Milly and assaulting her at his flat a few yards from Walton Station, he then drove her to his mother's house. He reversed down a long driveway and then raped her in broad daylight over the boot of his car.

'Bellfield then moved her to another location, where the rape and torture continued for a number of hours, until the next day when he finally strangled her to death.

'A few days after hearing this harrowing information from Surrey Police, they revealed to us that they were also investigating an alleged accomplice involved in the abduction and rape of Milly.

'The pressure this has put us under as a family has been unimaginable and has taken its toll on all of us. We have had to fight every step of the way to get this far. In desperation last November we wrote to the Home Secretary to tell her of our concerns, and she met with us immediately.

'Now we know the final hours of Milly's life, perhaps her soul, at long last, can finally rest in peace.

'The general public have always played a huge part in supporting us, for which we are eternally grateful and thankful. We believe that they should know what Bellfield did to our beautiful daughter and sister Milly.'

When I was young (long before sept 11 and the modern Islamic extremism) there were a few things you were recommended to say/do when going inside.

Firstly - say you are a smoker (even if you are not), you get a pack of tobacco in your emergency pack, tobacco = a good form of currency. Also if you are a non smoker you will only be given a cell with a non smoker.

Second - Say you suffer from a foot fungus or similar problem, you get extra socks and in some places are more likely to get your own cell.

Third - Become religious. Going to mass gives you extra association time. Back then Islam was highly recommend as not only will you get extra association time but the food you were served was also lot better. Like food? say you're a Muslim.

Nowadays Islam has a much greater presence in the prison system, particularity the high security sections (largely due to the great increase in terrorist convictions) so maybe the 'self preservation' angle is more prominent. I know several reports have been released drawing attention to the power a lot of extremists have on other Muslim prisoners and moderate or non practicing Muslims appear to get bullied into aliening themselves with certain groups. Who knows what has motivated this shithead

In US Federal Prisons, the only real upside (for normal guys) is the late-night chow during Ramadan. It's not the quality, just the timing. If you're in it for the food, your best bet is to join one of the Rastafarian or Moorish Science Temple groups. They eat really, really well. Jews and Muslims on the "common fare" a.k.a. Kosher meal plan usually wind up getting off the meal plan and just eating vegetarian with the occasional fish. The common fare is probably the most successful way of making people not want to go back to prison, though. That's the worst thing I've ever had in my life
For those who worry about their crimes being punished by other inmates, yeah I've definitely seen that. It depends on the location, though. When it comes to child molesters, they'll either accept them as a "changed man" or tell them to get lost, and that has more to do with both the nature of the crime and prison politics. If the prospective member is from a street or prison gang, then they might be out of luck.
Muslims in US Federal Prisons are probably restricted more than state or European prisons due to the prevalence of gang activity, the proximity to convicted terrorists, and quite a bit of young angry guys that have found a new outlet for their rage... The West.
The Salafi sect has a firm foothold in American prisons, which is one of the most dangerous and yet preventable situations imaginable. We are working to try to curb their influence, but it's unfortunately going to be a long, hard road. I have to assume that the same is true for prisons around the world, and from what I've read about this case it seems like the group he joined was one of them as well.
As has already been stated, he probably did it to avoid being raped, beaten, or murdered.

Am I understanding thus correctly that he approached Law Enforcement because a newly released inmate might have been about to do the same? What benefit does it give him if he's already been convicted and sentenced?

I think they mean he had already spilled his guts to his cell mate, and they didn't want that cell mate, who was about to be released, to let that information be made public without the police getting the details out of Bellfield and informing the relatives first. Imagine if they had read those details in a newspaper. Heads would have rolled...
