Unknown man opened fire after entering the museum in what Belgian interior minister describes as an apparent anti-Semitic attack.

At least three people were killed in a shooting in central Brussels at the city's Jewish museum on Saturday, local media reported.

Three were immediately reported dead, and another person was said to be seriously wounded in the attack. However, Belgian newspaper La Libre later reported the death toll at four.

Local media claimed a suspect had been arrested and is currently being interrogated.

A spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade said the shooter drove up to the museum, went inside and fired shots, and then fled the scence. An eye witness told RTBF that at least six shots were fired.

"According to the information we have at the moment, it was a solitary shooter and it seems to have happened inside the museum," Pierre Meys, Brussels fire brigade spokesman, told French channel BFM TV.

Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur told Belgian TV station RTBF that at least four people, three men and a woman, were caught up in the attack. A number of ambulances were at the scene.

The museum and its surroundings have been sealed off.

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Randers, who was one of the first officials to arrive at the scence, said he was "shocked by the killings at the Jewish Museum."

"There were a lot of witnesses and the investigation is moving fast," he added.

Belgium's interior minister, Joëlle Milquet, was quoted saying by the RTBF that anti-Semitic motives could be behind the attack.

"It's a shooting ... at the Jewish Museum," she was quoted saying. "All of this can lead to suspicions of an act of anti-Semitism."

Last month, Frazier Glenn Miller shot and killed three outside of the Jewish Community Center and a Jewish assisted-living facility in Overland Park, Kansas. Upon his arrest, he shouted "Heil Hitler," and was later revealed to have deep ties to white supremacist organizations.

I love Belgium, if I could go back, I probably would have stayed and never moved back to the USA. That being said, there's just as much 'hate' floating around there as anywhere else. I can't say this enough, since WWII - the hate for Jews is still there and the hate for those who persecuted them is still extremely strong. My father made the mistake of speaking German when we walked into a pizzeria one day and he didn't just get an icy reception. The owner of the place walked from behind the counter to the back with a seriously disgusted face and mumbling something under her breath.

There's been quite a few shootings in Belgium as of late.

Belgian people in general hate foreigners, but more than anything a lot of them still really hate Germans. This was in 2002, but what happened during WWI and II is still very real to many of them.

They have a Moroccan Muslim problem. Those bastards are v-i-o-l-e-n-t. They were the only people my dutch neighbors were afraid of. The problem is that they scream human rights violations if they even get questioned by police. I don't know why though, Belgian prisons are like Holiday Inn's, which is still ten times better than the parts of Morocco that they came from.
