Belgium, A car slammed at high speed into carnival revelers in a small town in southern Belgium early Sunday, killing six people and leaving 10 more with life threatening injuries.

The prosecutor's office said that in the early stages of the investigation there were no elements to suspect a terror motive.

This Sunday morning, a vehicle collided with a group of around 100 people which had just left the sports hall to go back up to the centre of the village,' the mayor's office said in a statement.

The public prosecutor's office did not wish to communicate on the case for the time being, but will speak later in the day, it said.

Local councillor Xavier Papier said: 'What was supposed to be the return of the joy of partying together turns into a horrible tragedy.

'This morning, we are all linked to Strépy-Bracquegnies, to the bereaved families and to the wounded by this horrific act.'

Olivier Destrebecq, another local councillor, said: 'horror and dead has this morning surrounded the Strépy-Bracquegnies carnival.

'Appearing out of nowhere, a car speeded into the crowd that had gathered. A heartfelt thought for these people and their families.'

The arrested were two men, born in 1990 and 1988, from La Louvière. The two returned from a dance and dropped off a third person at home before the accident.

Blood samples are currently being examined to see if the men were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The results are expected on Monday. House searches were also carried out "to see if there are elements that could explain the facts," police said.

According to the press judge of the public prosecutor's office, the two men should be brought before the investigating judge on Monday afternoon. Earlier today, the prosecutor's office confirmed that there is no evidence of any form of radicalism or extremism. The men are unknown to police.

First it was said it was chased by a police car, hence the high speed.

As the car stopped only 700 meters from the impact site, it is suspected that the passenger and driver changed seats. The 'driver' was lightely intox'd, the other a wee more.

The BMW 5 has automatic emergency stop function, but this did not engage. Could have been disactivated on purpose...

So, this is a case classified as manslaughter.
