At Least 43 Dead in Head-on collision between bus & lorry @ France.
So far the firefighters reported 39 confirmed dead. Some media say it are 42. -Update: 41 bus passengers, the lorry driver and his son has died. The busdriver survived with minor injuries. A fully loaded bus with elderly people and a truck crashed frontaly into each other and they both burned to the ground.. only 5 made it out alive Update 1: 2 of five wounded survivors are in critical condition. All but one of the victims were passengers on the coach, while the other fatality was the driver of the lorry, local authorities in the prefecture of Gironde said. The two vehicles collided head-on near the village of Puisseguin north of Bordeaux. The crash is the deadliest in France since 1982. "The French government has fully mobilised after this terrible tragedy," President Francois Hollande said from Athens, where he is on an official visit. Five passengers -- who managed to escape from the coach, which had caught fire -- sustained light injuries. Three others were unharmed, local authorities said. Several emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene. The coach, which was carrying 49 passengers and a driver, had departed early Friday from a village near the site of the accident to take its elderly passengers out on an excursion. Apparently bus was full of elderly people... Crash happened about 07:30am local time. A major rescue system was set up on the scene with 60 firefighters mobilized to extinguish the fire. A new report 49 dead and five slightly wounded.<--- That was false alarm! Still reported 42 dead. latest: 42 death, 8 wounded of which 4 critical Driver of truck lost control of the wheel, just in the curve so entering the opposite lane. |

Terrible. Dying in a combination vehicle accident/fire must be one of the worst ways to go. Hopefully that stretch of road will be redesigned so it's safer. |

Sixty firefighters, supported by twenty vehicles and helicopters are on site. 180 policemen were also deployed. A psychological cell was set up for families and friends at school, town hall square in Puisseguin. A chapel was erected in the multipurpose room. The Prime Minister Manuel Valls, the Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and the Secretary of State for Transport, Alain Vidal, arrived late morning on the scene.
