At Least 27 Dead, 180 Injured During Concert in Colectiv Club in Bucharest

At least 27 43 people have been killed and nearly 180 injured in an explosion and fire which happened during a concert accompanied by a pyrotechnics show at a nightclub in Bucharest, Romania.

Officials have confirmed the deaths of at least 27 43 people, while a further 180 suffered injuries and had to be rushed to nearby hospitals from Colectiv Club.

More than 60 ambulances and fire trucks have been deployed to the scene, according to the interior ministry.

Emergency services have set up a mobile hospital in order to immediately treat the most severely injured people.

However, it has been reported that the first responders had insufficient supplies to help all of those who needed the most urgent medical attention.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been officially confirmed, but according to reports the performance was supposed to have been accompanied by a pyrotechnics show that apparently went terribly wrong.

The fireworks reportedly set the stage installations on fire, causing thick smoke and forcing the audience flee to the exit, causing a stampede, according to a witness cited by someseanul.ro.

"There was a stampede of people running out of the club," a witness told.

Dozens of people suffered severe burns, according to first responders on the ground. Some reports have stated that part of the club’s roof collapsed, further injuring people inside.

Some 400 people had been inside the nightclub at the time of the incident. According to earlier reports, there had also been some minors at the club when the blast happened.

The concert was being held to mark the launch of a local heavy metal band’s new album.

It didn't went horribly wrong, it happened exactly what you'd expect when you allow the use of pyrotechnics INSIDE a club , moreover in a Country in which security for persons and property is a joke and self extinguishing materials, basically, don't exist: apparently, despite previous disasters like theThe Station nightclub fire, the República Cromañón fire, the Santika Club fire, the Kiss nightclub fire they though it was a good idea to use pyrotechnics inside the club anyway. This wasn't an incident, it was a mass suicide, ffs!

I was thinking the same thing Gatagato said. That place had no precautions. They were just out for profit. Even with fire codes shit like that can happen. It did in the US years ago at that club in Rhode Island. It just takes a few people to break the codes and a bunch of people die.

Most died poisoned by toxins released from the burning PolyUrethane acoustic foam, and as emerged, Luxory Media LLC, the firm that handled the acoustic ceiling treatment of Club Colectiv, revealed that they had "offered several options, but everybody chooses the cheaper one. A self-extinguishing version of the very same product, would have been 35-40% more expensive". Let alone its composition: the combination of poisons found in many of the victims was carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride, toluene, and xylene.

That is the problem, some shit that is banned in the rest of Europe is allowed/tolerated there, while Class ‘0’ PolyUrethane non-flammable acoustic foam should be the only one allowed, to begin with (in this case): the fire would have spread much more slowly, same goes for the leak of poisons: basically, 35 people lost their lives because some assholes whatsoever (instead of the law) could establish what to do to prevent a disaster like this, since an operating license was given to the club without a permit from the fire department.
The Club's owners have been arrested and charged with negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm, but it's a bit too late for the victims

Re: At Least 27 Dead, 180 Injured During Concert in Colectiv Club in Bucharest

Two more people succumbed Sunday to their wounds from a horrific nightclub fire in Bucharest that brought down the Romanian government, bringing the death toll up to 43, a hospital official said.
The chief of Floreasca hospital's plastic surgery department said the victims -- a young Romanian woman and a Turkish tourist -- died a day after nine other wounded lost their lives, including two who had been transferred to the Netherlands for treatment.

"The next seven days will be the most difficult with regards to treating the wounded," Health Minister Nicolae Banicioiu said Saturday. "We welcome any help, any medical teams coming from abroad."

Romanian media criticised the authorities for failing to transfer some of the wounded to hospitals abroad in time.

"Why has Romania not asked for international help before?" Gandul daily wrote, adding that the country's hospitals were struggling to treat more than 140 people wounded in the October 30 tragedy at the Colectiv nightclub.

Eighteen people were transferred abroad on Saturday -- eight to Belgium, eight to the Netherlands and two to Austria. Two more will be flown to Britain and Hungary on Sunday, the defence ministry said.

Re: At Least 27 Dead, 180 Injured During Concert in Colectiv Club in Bucharest

It looks like the mayor granted the working permit on the club even though it was not approved by firefighters. The lead singer had burns over 45% of his body and two guitarists died. It looks like that poor band is over. They were actually pretty good. I had never heard of them until this. I have had that song, the opener, "The Day We Die" in my head since hearing it. It is really weird that was their opening song

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Nine people died on Saturday from injuries sustained in a fire at a nightclub in Romania eight days ago, bringing the number of dead to 41 in a case which has sparked protests and led to the resignation of the government.

Two of the latest victims died in the Netherlands, where they had been transported for specialized treatment.

A little over 100 people are still in hospital and more than 40 of them are in serious or critical condition, Romania's interim prime minister, Sorin Cimpeanu, said.

The fire broke out late on Oct. 30 at a rock concert in the Colectiv nightclub in the capital Bucharest. Fireworks set insulation foam ablaze, triggering a stampede towards the single exit and trapping many of the roughly 400 people inside.

Tens of thousands of people subsequently took to the streets across Romania, angry at a public administration widely seen as corrupt, and the protests continued even after the cabinet resigned.

On Saturday several thousand protesters - though less numerous than on previous days - rallied for a fifth consecutive day to chant "Corruption kills" and "We won't go home, the dead won't let us".

Consultations over a new Romanian prime minister will resume next week after initial talks with political and civil society leaders yielded no candidate, President Klaus Iohannis said.

On Saturday, anti-corruption prosecutors said they had taken Cristian Popescu Piedone, mayor of the Bucharest district where Colectiv is located, into custody. He had resigned in the wake of the protests.

They said evidence had shown that Piedone granted a working permit for the club despite the fact it did not have authorization from firefighters.

"Given that several ... events took place ... in broadly unsafe public conditions, the lives, health and physical integrity of the audience and staff were permanently put in danger," prosecutors said in a statement.

The club's three owners were taken into custody on Nov. 2. City hall clerks and the owners of the company that installed the fireworks were also being investigated.

The fire has prompted an outpouring of community support, with people donating blood and money and volunteers taking food and drinks to hospitals for medical staff and victims' families.

Outside the club, people continued to light candles and lay flowers in remembrance.
