RIGA - Poland has offered a tank company to accompany the Canadian battle group to be deployed to Latvia, as the Polish Embassy in Riga verified to BNS.

Responding to the news that Poland may send tanks to Latvia, the Polish Embassy said that decisions made at NATO Warsaw summit, especially those concerning enhanced forward presence, were of utmost importance to the security of Latvia, Poland, and the entire region.

The allies expressed their unity and solidarity at the summit, said the embassy, adding that the current focus must be on implementation of the Warsaw summit decisions. The battle groups are expected to be prepared for operations at the beginning of next year.

The decision on the deployment of NATO battalions is a long-term duty, and NATO is at present developing a rotation plan for the battalions. The embassy noted that Poland would not only host a NATO battalion but also contribute to the battle group in Latvia.

Poland has offered a tank company to be stationed in Latvia as part of the Canadian-led battle group, said the Polish Embassy. Poland would like the command capacity of the Multinational Corps Northeast headquarters in Szczecin boosted by collective defense operations.

Poland also hopes that, according to the Warsaw summit decisions, Multinational Division Northeast headquarters will be established in Poland to command the four battle groups. According to Poland, NATO's command and control capacity has to be enhanced, and headquarters have to be located as close as possible to the regions where the battle groups are stationed.

While Poland has confidence in the allies’ loyalty in the face of a crisis, the nation is continuing to upgrade its armed forces and allocate a noteworthy amount of its budget to defense spending. Poland is pleased to have Latvia’s partnership for implementation of specific regional defense projects, emphasised the Polish Embassy.

According to unofficial information obtained by BNS in late September, Canada is likely to deploy LAV 6.0 light-armoured vehicles to Latvia in 2017, while Poland may deploy tanks to help fortify the nation’s security.

The Defense Ministry did not comment on this information to BNS, although Defense Minister Raimonds Bergmanis (Greens/Farmers) said earlier in September that the Canadian-led multinational battalion will include heavy weaponry.

which is pretty much what everyone has expected what with the new far right wing government....

fingers are crossed the military remains as a defensive unit and isn't used against polands own citizens in the near future

Think what you want but the police used to pacify the protesters was only used by previous goverment that was functioning for 8 years... not only that but there were some severe prosecutions for the opposition ( that is the goverment now ) and no, our goverment is not a right wing goverment, fuckheads want you to believe that just becouse this goverment is PRO POLISH and they are shitting themselves from fear.
