Hungarian authorities have detained a 97-year-old Nazi war crimes suspect accused of sending nearly 16,000 Jews to their deaths during World War II.
Laszlo Csatary, the top target on the Simon Wiesenthal Center most wanted Nazis list, was taken into custody in Budapest, where he had been hiding out for more than a decade, authorities said Wednesday.
Initial reports said Csatary was charged with war crimes, though authorities said he was just being questioned and hadn't been charged with anything yet.
Csatary was a senior police officer in Kosice, Slovakia, which at that time was occupied by Nazi Hungary and was known as Kassa, according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
He was in charge of the Jewish ghetto there and is suspected of sending some 15,700 Jews to Auschwitz and other death camps between 1941 and 1944.
In 1948, a Czechoslovakian court convicted him of war crimes and sentenced him to death.
But he escaped to Canada, where he lived under an assumed identity and worked as an art dealer in Toronto and Montreal.
His cover was blown in 1997, and he fled Canada as officials there were working to deport him.
He was living a quiet life in Hungary until last year, when the Wiesenthal center's top Nazi hunter tracked him down
The center alerted the Hungarian government, and authorities began closing in on him this week after the British newspaper The Sun - working with the center - shot photos of him carrying groceries and answering the door of a two-bedroom apartment in Budapest.
The Sun report said the aging fascist "forced (Jews in the ghetto) to dig ditches in frozen ground with their bare hands, made dissenting Jews take up stress positions for hours, hit them with a dog lead and oversaw a shoot-on-sight policy if they tried to escape."
Last week, the Wiesenthal center said it had new evidence of Csatary's role in sending 300 Jews from Kosice to Kamenetz-Podolsk, Ukraine in 1941, where they were among 23,600 Jews killed in one of the first mass-murder events of the Holocaust.
Prosecutor Tibor Ibolya told Agence France-Presse that the former Nazi denied sending thousands of Jews to die.
"One of his arguments in his defense is that he was obeying orders," Ibolya said.
Prosecutors said they want Csatary held under house arrest, which will also allow authorities to confiscate his passport.

waste of funds considering the state of the european economy, the governments in all european countries have much better things to spend their money on than hunting down and prosecuting these people who are pretty much already on their death beds
