Knife-wielding Man Wearing Fake Explosive Vest Shouting Allahu Akbar Shot Dead

The man is reported to have been carrying a weapon while trying to enter the police station in Northern Paris on the first anniversary on the Charlie Hebdo attacks.

A man carrying a meat cleaver has been shot dead outside a police station in northern Paris.

The attack came within 30 minutes of the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo massacres in Paris last year.

It came just as Francois Hollande was finishing a speech to French police to mark the anniversary of the attack on the satirical magazine which left two officers dead.

Witnesses say the man had attempted to enter the police station waving a knife in Rue de la Goutte d'Or in the 18th arrondissement at midday today.

However, he was shot dead by police officers. French media quoted a police source as saying several witnesses heard the knifeman crying "Allah akbar".

Early reports originally suggested he was wearing a suicide vest, but it was later revealed it was likely fake.

"The man did have a belt, but it was a fake. The bomb-disposal unit confirmed it was a fake," the police union source said.

Police sources were quoted by French media as saying the man was not wearing a suicide belt, but had a "wallet wrapped in tape from which wires hung out".

The suspect had no identity documents on him and police are now trying to confirm his identity.

French media has shared reports of what looked like a meat cleaver left at the scene.

Pierre-Henry Brandet, the spokesman for the minister of the interior Bernard Cazeneuve confirmed the belt was fake.

He said: "It is too early to say whether this was an act of terrorism. We must be cautious. It was an attack. The security forces showed true professionalism and vigilance. It is this which allowed them to neutralise this man."

Residents near the scene were reportedly told to shut their windows and stay away from their balconies.

Three streets surrounding the crime scene have been blocked and residents are asking when they can return to their homes.
