Dead, age 78, bacterial meningitis. Representatives said he passed away peacefully. I've had meningitis, if he did go peacefully it was because of massive amounts of end-of-life pain meds.  · |

I was a single father to two children when I contracted it. I had flu-like symptoms, but the kicker was a massive, spike-in-the-brain headache and neck stiffness. An Air Force PA diagnosed it, and was confirmed with a spinal tap. The antibiotics were prescribed (daptomyicin, I think), and I was sent home with no instructions to stay off my feet and no restrictions to quarters (mil-speak for approved medical time off). So, I picked up the kids from daycare, went home and started laundry and fed the kiddos. Mistake. The next day I tried to drive to daycare and then to work. My daycare lady said I looked a bit ashy and pale, but I said my presence defending the country was required, so off to work I went. Every time I came to a stop I opened the door and yakked. Got to work and sat at my desk for about ten minutes before running to the bathroom to spackle the toilet with HoneyNut Cheerios. Was sent back to the Medical Hobby Shop for reevaluation and a week at home convalescing. If that was a bit too detailed, I sincerely apologize.  The TL;DR version is fluish/severe headache, and yes.  |

Not too graphic for me. I wanted to know what it was like, and now I do. Thanks! I wonder if Beck thought he just had the flu, and put off treatment until it was too late? |

Friend of mine visited France and contracted meningitis. She described it as the most pain she's ever experienced in her life. I think she said she had to get a shot directly into her spine, nobody spoke English. Was like 16 and almost died right there. Sounded brutal. edit just read your post, description sounds spot on |
