Honestly think about it. If you had something you wanted to hide and make it darn near impossible to find. What better place then hiding it in something 'sacred'. You have a very strong argument on why it shouldn't be disturbed. Plus with the power of the Catholic church, a strong argument to not mess with them.

Much of that 'power' is being eroded in Europe at least, not before time either. Interestingly quite a number of babies now here in Italy aren't being baptised here any more, with the common idea that the child should decided when old enough. It sure wasn't like that a generation ago.
