Horrific Case Of Baby Neglect
Care workers missed 17 chances to stop a baby from dying in squalor after he was neglected by his alcoholic mother, a report said yesterday. Alex Sutherland, 13 months, was found charred and slumped in his pushchair beside a lit gas fire at his home. He also had several unexplained injuries and had been dead for THREE DAYS. Mum Tracey Sutherland, 40, was jailed last year for 27 months after admitting child cruelty - and a serious case review was launched. Tracy Sutherland: ![]() It has concluded that Alex's fate was "predictable and preventable". Health and social workers were blasted for putting the mother's welfare ahead of her son's and ignoring risks to him. At the time, former pharmacist Sutherland, of Baguley, Greater Manchester, was drinking up to six bottles of wine a day. Although Alex was taken into care briefly, he was ALLOWED back with his mother after she claimed she would stop boozing. Warnings by her friends and family about the child's well-being were squandered. Police alerted social services to mistreatment of Alex but they failed to investigate thoroughly. A week before his death, an anonymous caller told social workers the boy was undernourished and Sutherland was being erratic. A health visitor asked for an appointment but it was shelved. The report, which referred to Alex as Child T and Sutherland as Mrs E, said: "Child T was known to agencies because of Mrs E's misuse of alcohol. "Yet 17 expressions of concern (four of which alleged she was drunk) failed to trigger a reconsideration of the initial assessments that the likelihood of future, significant harm was low. "He was the victim of multiple failures, of all agencies with whom he was involved." The inquiry was carried out by Manchester Safeguarding Children's Board. |

Re: Horrific Case Of Baby Neglect
I still do not understand why she was allowed custody or even unsupervised visitation with this child after admitting to child cruelty. In most cases that I have heard, the parent must go through a probationary period which may or may not last until the child is of age in which the perpetrator is closely supervised. |
