Homeless Man Uses a Human Skull As a Puppet, Leads Police to Body

Nick Pecoraro was working in the Riverwalk Plaza, when he spotted a man who happens to be homeless wandering the parking lot with a white object in his hands.

The Indian River County Sheriff's Office would later confirm that item was a human skull.

"He was using like a puppet," said Pecoraro, who claims the man appeared to be talking to the skull and showing it off to customers in the parking lot before he left it on top of a trashcan outside of the Sebastian Publix Tuesday morning.

At first, Pecoraro thought the skull was fake until he got close enough to catch a whiff.

"It smelled like death," Pecoraro said.

He immediately called 911.

Pecoraro said he can be heard in the emergency call that WPBF obtained from IRCSO.

"It's definitely a human skull it's still got teeth in it," Pecoraro told an incredulous dispatcher. "I'm standing in front of it, but I'm not touching (it)," he said.

Indian River County Sheriff's Office spokesman Thomas Raulen said the skull was part human remains discovered in a wooded area near U.S. 1 and Roseland Road.

Raulen said the unidentified homeless man had been living in the wooded area when he stumbled upon the skeletal remains near a path. "He had put the skull on top of a trash can over there because he wanted to tell somebody to call the Sheriff's Office," insisted Raulen Tuesday.

Raulen said the man willingly led investigators to scene.

Deputies said the wooded area is known to be frequented by homeless people, but Raulens said the remains were not close to any known "camps."

Investigators said its too early to tell the cause of death or the gender of the victim.
