A female zookeeper has been seriously injured after being attacked by a pygmy hippopotamus in the Czech Republic.

Doctors are battling to save the woman's right leg after she lost a lot of blood at the facility in Dvur Kralove, 75 miles northeast of the capital Prague

The unnamed victim, who was said to be an experienced keeper, is in intensive care following the attack.

She is being treated at a hospital in the city of Hradec Kralove.

Pygmy hippos weigh up to 275kg (600lb) and are native to western Africa.
