CINCINNATI - Ohio authorities are investigating multiple possibilities for why a 12-year-old boy fatally shot his 9-year-old half brother and then turned the gun on himself, a coroner said Friday.

The police chief said the answer might never be known.

Jackson County Coroner Dr. Gregory Hawker said investigators don't know whether the shootings in Jackson in southern Ohio were a murder-suicide, a suicide pact or an accidental shooting followed by suicide. Authorities say each boy had a single gunshot wound to the head.

The shooting happened Wednesday in an upstairs bedroom at the home of the boys' maternal grandparents. Police say the boys, Austin Wiseman, 12, and Blake Campbell, 9, lived there.

"You want to think it was an accident," Hawker said, adding that there's not enough evidence yet to draw any conclusion.

"There was no sign of a struggle," Hawker said. "The younger boy was just sitting in a children's chair, sitting there like he was watching TV."

He said only two bullets were fired, and two casings were recovered along with a .44-caliber handgun. The gun belonged to the boys' grandfather, Police Chief Carl Eisnaugle said Friday.

Investigators don't believe anyone else was involved.

Hawker said state investigators have taken the older boy's computer to look for clues to what might have led up to the shootings.

Eisnaugle said there might never be an explanation.

"Whether or not it's an accident would be extremely hard to determine," Eisnaugle said. "I don't know if we'll ever know."

Authorities said the grandparents had gone out to take care of some personal business but talked to the boys by phone at about 10 a.m. Wednesday. It's believed the shootings happened at about 11 a.m.

Jackson is a city of about 7,000 people in mostly rural Appalachian Ohio, 65 miles south of Columbus.

dumb parents but still the boy is old enough to not play around with a gun me thinks plus the fact he shot himself.
maybe envy or some sort of abuse (by (grand)parent(s)/relatives) he wanted to end right there.

Relatives say 12-year-old Austin Wiseman and his 9-year-old half-brother Blake Campbell were close, so it was with disbelief that they tried to digest the news.

Shirley Causey is already sure.

“I know Austin was very loving and caring. ... He always wanted to protect people,” said Causey, who knew the boy. “In my mind, I’m just thinking that maybe Blake found the gun and Austin tried to take it away from him and it went off. He didn’t do it on purpose; I don’t believe he would have done it on purpose. He loved his brother, I know he did.”

The younger boy was shot in the head and died right away, Hawker said. After shooting his brother from a few feet away, Austin put the gun under his chin and shot himself.

A .44-caliber, six-shot revolver was found at the scene. Hawker said there were other weapons present, but the revolver was the only one loaded. The weapon has not yet been determined to be the one that fired the fatal shots

I'm wondering if maybe abuse wasn't going on, and the elder brother did it as a mercy killing, and then killed himself to get away? =/

Either way, the child should not have had ANY access to the weapon. I'm a gun owner, I love shooting, but that shit is never in reach of anyone but myself or other adults.
