I grew up in Riverside and remember this well. It was totally strange. But DMSO was a popular treatment with certain people who love strange remedies. And it does stink. I tended to agree that some of the fainting was due to hysteria. I have seen some strange things in that hospital when I went there for treatment.
Guy with a bullet wound who was drunk and just wandering around showing off the bullet hole.
