Re: Girl, 6, Loses Jaw & Tongue After Being Mauled By 2 Pit Bulls
Genetics plays a huge part in determining an animal's potential for aggression. A lot of breeds can be raised wrong and not turn vicious; others can be raised and right and turn regardless. But when you combine a high aggression animal with a shitty upbringing, you get stories like this one. That said: most pit bull breeds have a high potential for aggression. |

Aggression can be genetic and it can also be taught, however the genetic temperament has to be there. That's why responsible breeders go out of their way to breed dogs with proper temperament. We had this conversation before.. |

Re: Girl, 6, Loses Jaw & Tongue After Being Mauled By 2 Pit Bulls
All the breeds that were created to take on other creatures(including humans) are known for higher aggression. It's needed for their originating jobs. That's most of the medium to extra large breeds AND many of the little ones that were bred for rodent control. Then again, dogs like Huskies were bred for serious sled work and are on the radar for being aggressive. So, if you fear the potential for aggression, stick to small breeds that can't kill you(but are still known to be aggressive/snippy) and weren't bred for work - which leaves you with lap-dog breeds. (Assuming you find a good breeder) Otherwise, it's a roll of the dice + your knowledge of the beast. |

Re: Girl, 6, Loses Jaw & Tongue After Being Mauled By 2 Pit Bulls
American Pit Bull Terriers were used for fighting other dogs and not stopping. They were also good for farm work and family pets. A lot of the fighters were also with the family. Dogs can tell the difference between people and other creatures. But that was back then, when it was legal. (there are still dogs bred for this, illegally) Now, they're bred as working dogs.(hog hunting/weight pull ect.) They're very versatile and excel at many different things. Normal, well bred Pit Bulls are very people oriented and will try to do whatever is asked of them. They're very into drive. Different bloodlines/kennels will also breed for different traits. So, not all dogs in a breed are created equal. The name is the same and sometimes the looks - but everything else may be different. But, that's only speaking of responsibly bred dogs. Who the hell knows what went into the two in this story? Probably shitty, unstable parents and lack of socialization and training. Perfect recipe for disaster. |

Thanks that was really well worded.. Can we agree that there are idiots that are giving responsible dog owners like yourself a bad rap?
