Frozen Dog Found in Shed; Owner Arrested

A man was arrested this week about one month after his dog was found frozen and starved to death in a shed in the back yard.

The dog was found in a search that was initiated by a tip, sent to Macon County Animal Control Officer Corey Lawrence via Facebook.

Lawrence, who was out of town on animal control business, asked that an officer from the Macon County Sheriff Department be sent.

Deputy Pam Whitlow first found the dog, curled up in the back corner of a shed at 3879 Old RBS Road, Lafayette.

The 3 year old female squirrel dog was frozen to the floor, and Whitlow could not remove her. Whitlow took a written report from the dog’s owner, Shawn Day, who said that the dog had died accidentally of poisoning.

When he returned, Animal Control Officer Lawrence was able to remove the dog from the floor of the shed with a shovel. The dog was sent for an necropsy.

Weeks later, the results came back. The dog had died of starvation and hypothermia. The necropsy report mentions serious emaciation from lack of nutrition, and says that there is no evidence of poison in the dog’s system.

Day, age 38, was charged on February 5 with aggravated animal cruelty and failure to appear. He was on probation at the time of the arrest.

Aggravated animal cruelty is a Class E felony, which can carry 1-6 years in prison and fines up to $3,000.

“Maybe it’ll make some people think twice about not feeding their dog, and remember to bring their dog inside when it’s freezing out,” said Lawrence. “We just want this to be an eye-opener for everyone else.”

Harming the defenseless, please tell me hell exists for people like this?
A little FYI it's a necropsy. Also, the only reason he'll probably get jail time is because he was already on probation. Normally it's a small fine and 100 hours of community service.

My favorite mistake from a news article was one Amy posted. It said "butt flies" instead of "bott flies."

It takes a very long time to starve a dog to death, which makes this all the more cruel. I get so tired of people telling me their pet can withstand the elements because they acclimate to them. Biggest load of horse-shit.

How many more stories of pets freezing to death is it going to take before people realize this?
