A 24-year-old man has been convicted of animal cruelty by a Marseille court after injuring a kitten by throwing it against an apartment building, then uploading a video clip of the act on his Facebook profile, officials said.

Frenchman Farid Ghilas has been sentenced to a year in prison.

The video first shows Ghilas throwing the 5-month-old kitten named Oscar high into the air toward a large bush. A second clip shows him throwing the cat at an apartment building wall, and the cat plunging hard onto a concrete sidewalk.

The Marseille division of SPA, France’s animal welfare society, says it is treating Oscar for a broken foot and a stomach injury suffered in the attacks, which occurred after the accused found the kitten on a street. The owner later recovered his pet and brought it to the SPA for treatment.

Ghilas, who had eight previous criminal convictions, expressed remorse at the incident.

"I don't know what came over me. I was an idiot and I regret it," he told the court, which also forbade him from owning pets.

The Brigitte Bardot Foundation, a separate animal welfare group, has also filed a complaint against Ghilas and police are trying to identify the person who filmed the scene.

Christophe Marie, the foundation’s spokesman, said the video was made on January 21. The Facebook video was later taken down and Ghilas was arrested on Friday.

Marie said the foundation handles around 300 animal cruelty cases every year.

“More and more people are filming themselves doing this and putting it online. In this case, the fact he put it on his Facebook profile with his personal details made it very easy for the police to find him,” Marie said.

Even if he avoids prison (despite the eight previous criminal convictions), his first name, last name, phone number, mobile phone number, address, email address, fb account, photographs, have been made public by some/MANY websites.
I wouldn't want to be in his shoes.
Plus, Farid Ghilas doesn't sound to be a very french name.
