French teenage girl broadcast her suicide live on Periscope via her smartphone, French judicial sources confirmed on Wednesday, in the latest controversy to hit the streaming web application.

Hundreds of horrified viewers of Periscope - which lets individuals broadcast live via mobile devices - could only look on while the unnamed 19-year-old died at Egly, a suburban train station south of Paris, on Tuesday afternoon.

She took her own life minutes after apparently naming an ex-boyfriend she said had raped her before publishing pictures of the act on Snapchat, the image-sharing application, France Info reported.

"Analysis of the telephone and recovery of the video are underway," said a judicial source, adding that the dead girl had "allegedly identified an assailant" during the video before committing suicide. However, the source said that the details of why she took her life were subject to confirmation.

"We were alerted at around 4.30pm by a Periscope user who was connected to the victim and told us and who told us that she was not in a good way," a police source told AFP.

Despite pinpointing her location via the application, gendarmes could not get to the station in time to save her life.

The girl, a brunette with long hair and brown eyes speaking under a pseudonym, stage-managed the run-up to her death by telling Periscope followers to tune in at 4pm to hear revelations. In one half-hour extract still on Youtube, she says: "This isn't about creating a buzz, it's to get people to react, to open minds".

"What I will say will be alright. What will happen is likely to be very shocking," she announced in one of several videos broadcast before her demise.

She then warned: "If there are underage minors watching later on, don't stay."

"I've reached a stage where I have no desire for anything anymore, nothing gives me pleasure, nothing gives me the strength to get up in the morning," she went on.

Armed with a smartphone and a good connection, Periscope allows users to broadcast a live video stream, which is relayed via a Twitter account and visible to all. Viewers can send hearts to say they "like" the broadcast and post questions or comments to the broadcaster, who can respond in real time.

The video then remains viewable for the following 24 hours before being taken offline. Another app called Meerkat offers a similar service but the live video disappears once you choose to end the broadcast.

After the French girl's mysterious announcement, viewers reportedly reacted with comments asking her not to do anything rash.

"I never said I was going to commit suicide, stop that!," she can reportedly be heard replying to one question.

A final video, partly blacked out, appears to film the young woman's final minutes.

Appalled viewers called for someone to contact the police. A few minutes later, images show a fireman bend down and pick up the telephone, apparently placed somewhere on the platform. The video of her committing suicide has been taken offline.

The driver of the train and two witnesses were treated for shock following the suicide. "When they arrived emergency services could do nothing but confirm that the girl was dead," said Le Parisien.

The teenager lived in Egly, apparently alone. Her parents also reportedly live in the area.

Since Twitter introduced Periscope last spring, it has been used for more than 100 million broadcasts.

However, it has faced accusations that it encourages violent or vulnerable people to commit sensational acts to thousands of viewers.

A lot of people who commit suicide have been said to be calm just before they kill themselves, even happy. Apparently the knowledge that they are going to be free from their suffering helps change their mood.
