He should be sentenced for "6" years to hit the healthy 100, and he should be tried in Israel not Germany.

It takes good men do nothing, for evil to prosper...

Re: Former Nazi Death Camp Guard Sentenced to 5 Years

I'm not excusing him but 1 he might've been one of dozens there, and wasn't as bad as Amon Goeth, if he tried to help, Hitler would've had his family all shot.
2 I'm betting through the ages there were worse people than him.
Ghengis Khan, Vlad the impaler and they're the ones we know of.
Did you know that 14,000,000 Asian Men carry Ghengis's Gene to this day?
One, it's documented that several guards requested and were granted other assignments.

There's no documentation of Hitler snuffing out his soldiers families for refusing to work at the death camps.

And I'm sure he was one of dozens there. Don't see why that matters.

And also I'm sure there was and are today worse people than this man. I didn't say there wasn't.

I said what the nazis did was possibly the worst thing ever to happen. This man was only following orders. But he still should pay for it.

Good to see him get something out of it, but I can't help but think that it's only the victors that decide who's a war criminal.

There's an awful lot of people walking around today freely that deserve to be put on trial.

You obviously don't know. Every one of them is guilty. Even the secretaries.

Guards threw babies at trees for fun. It was standard that infants were shot on sight. But for fun they would rip babies apart with their bare hands, or force the parents to drown their own child. ...or even eat their own child.

My grandfather told me of the horrors he witnessed. Dogs trained to rape women, babies stuffed into soccer balls before getting kicked around, geysers of blood erupting from the floor. They used to drill holes in people's asses and then fill them with air until they explode. Just horrible.

He deserves worse.

Re: Former Nazi Death Camp Guard Sentenced to 5 Years

A former Nazi SS guard who was sentenced to five years in prison by a German court for his role as an accessory in the murder of at least 170,000 people in the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp in Poland has appealed his conviction.

Attorneys for Reinhold Hanning, 94, filed appeals of the verdict handed down earlier this month by the district court in Detmold, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, The Associated Press reported.

Lawyers representing nine Auschwitz survivors or their families as co-plaintiffs at the trial also appealed the verdict, according to the AP, which could not provide further details.

Hanning will remain free while he appeals.

He joined the Waffen SS in 1942 and was posted that year to Auschwitz. Hanning had joined Hitler Youth in 1934.

His is likely one of the last trials of Nazis in Germany. Clues leading to about 30 suspects in late 2013 came from the Central Office for the Investigation of National Socialist Crimes in Ludwigsburg, which made a major push to identify former death camp guards after the conviction of John Demjanjuk in 2011 for his role in the murders of nearly 30,000 Jews at the Sobibor death camp in Poland.

Demjanjuk died in a German nursing home in 2012 during his appeal.
