First Documented Great White Shark to Cross the Atlantic
From MSN news: ![]() A 15ft Great White shark with 300 razor-sharp teeth is on course for Britain shore's and could reach us by Monday. Lydia, who weighs 142 stone and can reach speeds of 35mph, is being tacked by a research team and is currently 1,0000 miles from the Cornish coast. If the deadly predator carries on in the direction she is going she could reach us in the next 48 hours, making her the first recorded Great White to ever cross the Atlantic. The map below shows her progress so far. ![]() Scientists in the US used a hydraulic platform to fit a tracking device to Lydia in Florida last March. Since then she has swam 19,000 miles and in the past three days alone has travelled 380 miles and is now near the mid-Atlantic ridge. ![]() Dr Gregory Skomal, a senior fisheries biologist, said: "No white shark has ever crossed west to east or east to west. "Although Lydia is closer to Europe than North America she has not technically crossed the Atlantic until she crossed the mid-Atlantic ridge which she has yet to do. "We have no idea how far she will go, but Europe, the Med and the coast of Africa are all feasible. "If she crosses the ridge she will be the first recorded shark to cross the Eastern Atlantic." Great Whites are the laregest predatory fish on the planet and can reach up to 20ft long and 4,400lbs in weight. They have 300 serrated teeth across several teeth and can live up to 25 years. Actually no. Imagine you're a shark or Tuna. Monsters all above you in metal contraptions and nets bigger than you can escape. We're the real monsters of this planet. Well, the Japs, Chinese are anyways. |
