At least 27 people have been killed in a fire that tore through a bar in Bangkok, Thailand's prime minister has said. Firefighters were called to the scene just after midnight on Monday, and discovered patrons fleeing through the flame-enveloped front door of the venue. Footage posted on X shows flames blasting out of the bar as people run out, some screaming, and some falling over. At least two people appear to be on fire. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told media at the scene that 27 bodies have been recovered, and others have been taken to hospital. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

Firefighters were reportedly able to bring the flames under control in about half an hour, but the result was already devastating. Local reports said that nine men and 18 women make up the 27 who were killed. More than 60 people are being treated in hospital. A number of people are still missing, Thai outlet Thairath reported.

The ceiling of the pub was lined with thick acoustic foam panels used for soundproofing. Polyurethane sound foam is highly flammable and acts like solid fuel.

when it caught fire, it dropped melting, burning chemical debris from above, causing the entire ceiling area to instantly become a sea of flames.

tiny windows and door(s) were closed and consumed all the oxygen so eventually the fire would have died out but firefighters broke one door open and then we all know what happens. Backdraft. Flashover.

Firefighter/medic here. I wouldn’t call that a backdraft. Just a flashover with a very high fuel load. Great view of bi-directional flow path.

Many patrons instinctively ran away from the fire toward the back restrooms, but the emergency exit door there was padlocked, to prevent people from leaving without paying.

The remaining exits were partially blocked by furniture and a vendor table, causing a massive crush as people tried to escape the rapidly growing heat.

Because of the burning plastic and foam, the flashover was preceded by thick, black, toxic smoke containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide.

Experts believe many victims succumbed to smoke inhalation before the actual flames reached them.

The total death toll has risen to 30 dead, with 73 total injuries. There are 25 patients currently fighting for their lives in intensive care units. Most victims were discovered trapped in windowless restrooms near the back of the venue. The pub's business owner is reportedly among those heavily injured and currently receiving treatment in an intensive care unit.
