Finally, Microsoft is Killing Off Internet Explorer

This is the best news I have read all day. I can not tell you, as a website owner, how much I despise Internet Explorer.

Among the geekerati and technosnobs, Internet Explorer has long been an object of scorn and derision. The browser that Microsoft bundles with its Windows operating system has a reputation for being slow, bloated, buggy, insecure and riddled with proprietary, non-standard technology.

Much of that reputation is from IE’s past, with versions 6 through 8 being the worst offenders. But recent versions – and particularly IE 11, the current release – are much improved. IE is more secure and more standards-compliant now, but it still draws sneers from those who think they know better.

Nevertheless, Internet Explorer remains the most-used browser globally by a wide margin. In November, it had a nearly 59 percent share of the browser market, according to NetMarketshare. Google’s Chrome, the nearest competitor, clocked in at under 21 percent.

Still, Microsoft apparently thinks that IE’s time is nearing an end. According to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, the company is considering ending its development and focusing on a new, leaner browser – code-named Spartan – that will be released next year with Windows 10.

And it won’t be branded as “IE 12”, Foley says:

However, if my sources are right, Spartan is not IE 12. Instead, Spartan is a new, light-weight browser Microsoft is building.

Windows 10 (at least the desktop version) will ship with both Spartan and IE 11, my sources say. IE 11 will be there for backward-compatibility’s sake. Spartan will be available for both desktop and mobile (phone/tablet) versions of Windows 10, sources say.

Spartan is just a codename at this point. My sources don’t know what Microsoft plans to call this new browser when it debuts. The IE team hinted during a Reddit Ask Me Anything earlier this year that the team had contemplated changing the name of IE to try to get users to realize the much more standards-compliant IE of today is very different from older, proprietary versions of IE.

Re: Finally, Microsoft is Killing Off Internet Explorer

I use Firefox and don't have any problems with it.

Microsoft never finishes and/or perfects their products.

They just come up with something - supposedly 'new' - and then try to force you to buy it.

F*ck them and their mafia tactics.

BTW, Microsoft, why don't you just go back and finish XP?

I was a die hard fan of XP, then moved to 7. Skipped vista and 8. Probably going to stay with Windows 7 for quite some time, until they stop releasing bloated crapware.

Re: Finally, Microsoft is Killing Off Internet Explorer

I am running XP and I had to switch to Firefox two years ago because so many sites (including Hotmail and Facebook) were hanging up on the most recent XP-compatible version of IE.

Now, as of Sunday, I can't get Firefox to run. I removed whatever version I had and installed the latest one, and that didn't help. After running every scan possible from Avast and Malewarebytes (after updating), there wasn't a single threat that needed to be removed.

Nine times out of ten, I can't even get Firefox to open in it's own "Safe Mode". When I can, I check Task Manager and FF is using up 100% of my "CPU Usage".

DR is about the only website that seems stable on IE.

Windows 7 it is, security patches 'till 2020 it may give some support for non security patches, DirectX 12 and hopefully this Spartan browser...MS have pretty much given up on Win 8 and moving straight through to Win 10, maybe in the first quarter of 2015... Rumours are that some upgrades will be free....They're looking towards subscriptions too, that'll baffle the pirates

I use FF never had any problems with it...They've got a handle on the memory leaks now...I use a lot of the FF addons....Chrome is pretty secure too with its built in sandbox...I don't really trust any of the others security wise.

The only problem I had with Chrome is that it took over and I couldn't run another browser.

Too Nazi.

I should have flexibility and the 'freedom' to move back and forth.

Chrome 'rolled through Poland' and tried to 'software Blitzkrieg' me into their One Party Only approach.

I deleted Chrome and was just glad that I didn't have it long enough for them to send the Chrome Gestapo after me.
