I have a pretty high tolerance for images of death and violence like most of us on this board, but the images of this dying woman hit me more deeply than most I can remember.

This is the moment a dying woman is helped after she was gunned down marching for freedom.

Shaimaa el-Sabagh was taking part in a rare demonstration in Egypt to mark the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak.

The mum, who has a five-year-old son, is believed to have been shot in the head and body as she marched peacefully to lay a commemorative wreath of roses on the eve of the anniversary.

Videos posted online show Shaimaa moments before her death, standing with fellow members of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party (SPAP) chanting and holding placards saying: “bread, freedom and social justice.”

The footage then shows an armed office wearing a black mask standing nearby and the words “shoot, shoot” are heard before gunshots erupt.

The 32-year-old activist falls to the pavement and is reportedly helped to her feet by friend Sayyed Abu el-Ela, who is a lawyer.

She was later carried away from the scene and declared dead in hospital. Today hundreds arrived to pay tribute at her funeral in Alexandria.


One protester tweeted: “She wanted to lay roses in Tahrir. Today we’ll be laying roses for her after police officers shot and killed her.”

The mum was killed just hours before state television aired a pre-recorded speech by President Al Sisi to mark the fourth anniversary of the popular uprising which ousted Mubarak.

On January 25th 2011 mass demonstrations against poverty, corruption, and political repression broke out in several Arab countries.

“I salute all our martyrs, from the beginning of January 25 (2011) until now,” said Sisi.

The Interior Ministry denied police had used ‘birdshot’ -which is supposed to be non-lethal - to disperse the protest and claimed police moved in when the crowd started setting off fireworks and only used two tear gas canisters.

They suggested in a statement that Islamist “infiltrators” were to blame.

Sabagh’s death is the second of a female protester in recent days.

Islamist Sondos Reda was shot dead during a Friday protest in Alexandria. Activists also blame the police.

I can't figure out what they were protesting? I mean, I read the article, but I still don't understand their reasons.

Thousands of people on Sunday attended the funeral of 32-year-old socialist and poet Shaimaa al-Sabbagh, who was among at least 23 people killed and 97 wounded over the weekend at rallies and vigils across Egypt to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the country's 2011 uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak.

Many of the killings were directly attributed by eye-witnesses to the country's feared police and security forces, who have orchestrated a coordinated crackdown on political dissent which has escalated since former Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi rose to the presidency through a military coup engineered in July 2013.

Chants of "Down with the military and the regime" and "Interior Ministry are thugs" rang through the funeral procession in Alexandria for al-Sabbagh—who leaves behind a five-year old child.
