Family Charged with Execution-style Murder of 8 People on Cannabis Farm

Ohio authorities arrested a family on Wednesday accused of the execution-style murder of eight people on a pot farm in 2016.

George "Billy" Wagner III, Angela Wagner, George Wagner IV and Edward "Jake" Wagner were arrested on Wednesday by the Pike County Sheriff's Office on accusations they planned and carried out the murders of the Rhoden family in April of 2016. The Rhoden family was found massacred on their family farm, where authorities found evidence of marijuana "grow operations."

The Wagner family lived in Peebles, Ohio, at the time of the killings but later moved to Alaska.

The victims were identified as Hannah Gilley, 20; Christopher Rhoden, Sr., 40; Christopher Rhoden, Jr., 16; Clarence "Frankie" Rhoden, 20; Dana Rhoden, 37; Gary Rhoden, 38; Hanna Rhoden, 19; and Kenneth Rhoden, 44. A 4-day-old, a 6-month-old and a 3-year-old survived.

Jake Wagner, 26, was a long-time former boyfriend of victim Hanna Rhoden and shared custody of their daughter at the time of the massacre.

The Rhodens were found dead in four separate homes on the farm. Autopsies from the Pike County Medical Examiner showed that all eight victims died of gunshots wounds and evidence of a struggle. Some of the victims had shown soft tissue bruising, indicating that they fought their killer or killers, according to the medical examiner's report.

While searching the crime scenes, officials found that one of the grow operations was comprised of more than 100 marijuana plants.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said at the time the said the murders were a "pre-planned execution." Authorities have yet to give a suspected motive for the killings.

Investigators scrambling to determine who targeted the Rhoden family and why had conducted over 130 interviews and processed over 100 pieces of evidence and 550 tips, while getting assistance from more than 20 law enforcement agencies.

Re: Family Charged with Execution-style Murder of 8 People on Cannabis Farm

News article from 2016

Harrowing 911 calls detail the blood-soaked horror in which eight members of the Rhoden family — including a teen — were found slaughtered execution-style in their Ohio homes.

“I think my brother-in-law is dead. There’s blood all over the house. My brother-in-law is in the bedroom, and it looks like someone has beat the hell out of him,” a hysterical family member told Piketon police at 7:50 a.m. Friday.

“I think they are both dead,” she said, breathing heavily.

The relative found Chris and Gary Rhoden both shot in the head at 4077 Union Hill Road in rural Peebles.

Police asked if anyone else was in the house with her.

“The doors were locked when I got here, but I have a key. And I went in, and they were laying on the floor,” she said.

“Don’t let anyone go in there,” the operator told the sobbing woman, who was not identified.

The caller’s father, Leonard Manley, said she discovered the scene after stopping by to feed the dogs and chickens, the Chillicothe Gazette reported.

Another distraught call was made at 1:30 p.m.

“I need a deputy to come out to [sic] close to 799 Left Fork. It’s all that stuff that’s on the news. I just found my cousin with a gunshot wound,” the caller said of Kenneth Rhoden.

When asked if Kenneth was still alive, he responded “No, no.”

The second caller, who also was not identified, assumed everything was fine when he entered his cousin’s place.

“I just went in hollering at him, and checked if he was all right, and I looked up at him and he had a gunshot wound,” he said.

The calls were released by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office Saturday morning.

Other members of the Rhoden family killed in the murder spree include Dana Rhoden, her ex-husband Christopher Rhoden, and their children Hanna and Frankie. Also killed was Frankie’s fiancée Hannah Hazel Gilley, and 16-year-old Chris Rhoden.

Media reports did not make clear Chris’ place in the family.

Three children, ages 4 days to 3 years, survived the massacre, said Attorney General Mike DeWine and Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader.

“It’s heartbreaking,” DeWine said. “The one mom was killed in her bed with the 4-day-old right there.”

Many of the victims were likely in bed asleep in the four separate homes when the targeted slayings took place, authorities said.

The crime scenes were within walking distance of each other in the Appalachian region, about 80 miles east of Cincinnati.

Investigators say they don’t know how many people carried out the executions.

“There may be one, there may be two, there may be three. We just don’t know,” DeWine said.

Authorities have yet to make any arrests. They also don’t know the motive for the killings.

The devastated Rhoden family released a statement Saturday thanking police, and asked people to “keep them in your prayers.”
