AMSTERDAM - Six suspects have been arrested after a shooting and robbery of a cash transport in Amsterdam-Noord on Wednesday afternoon. One of the suspects was killed. A wild chase ensued - according to witnesses, including cars travelling at high speed along the cycle path - which ended near Broek in Waterland. The suspects fled into a meadow. "It's a miracle that no policemen and civilians were hit," said the police.

The search for fugitives continues. Officers were shot at with automatic weapons, reports a spokesman to De Telegraaf. Among other things, a police surveillance car was heavily fired upon. The suspects continued to shoot at pursuing officers in an area outside Amsterdam.


The suspects were pursued by numerous police cars from Amsterdam. They fled in at least two cars. Near Broek in Waterland, five suspects ran into a meadow. A police spokesperson said that shots were fired. At least two suspects were wounded. It is not yet clear whether the dead suspect was killed by a bullet fired by police officers.





The robbers' intended loot was said to amount to many tens of millions. An amount of 50 million is mentioned, well-informed sources told De Telegraaf. This would include gold and diamonds. Several of the robbers are said to be foreigners. Several investigative sources confirm that these are French-speaking criminals. For reasons of investigation, the police will not comment further.

In the village northeast of Amsterdam, a car also burned out, probably a getaway car. Large clouds of smoke can be seen in the countryside. Images of burnt-out vehicles are also appearing elsewhere. On social media, images are circulating of armed police officers running through the village. Someone has also filmed from his window how a suspected suspect is handcuffed by a group of policemen.

The suspects were on the run after a robbery on a transport of valuables on the Meeuwenlaan in Amsterdam-Noord, near the premises of Schöne Edelmetaal, where gold is traded, among other things. Other CCTV footage shows a car driving through a fence into the back garden. The suspects jump out and run off. "They drove at least 60, 70 km on the bicycle path. With heavy cars, that's why they stood out so much. You could hear them coming from afar. I think it was an Audi," an eyewitness told a local news groop, AT5.

A large number of police cars have already been called to the north of the capital. At least three police helicopters are flying over the city and emergency services are on site. Special units are combing the area. The search continues. The police have not ruled out any other suspects.





Bystanders are asked by the police to leave and residents are asked to stay indoors. Public transport is being diverted and the N247 between Amsterdam and Hoorn is closed in both directions.

The Amsterdam police held a press conference early this evening about the armed robbery and pursuit. According to the police, the deployment of one of the helicopters played a decisive role in catching the robbers. The crime scene is further guarded by heavily armed police officers. The police speak of extreme violence against policemen and exceptional police deployment. They are said to be professional criminals. "It is a miracle that no policemen and civilians have been hit," said the police.
