Dying for an Ice Cream
A 3-year-old girl was killed in a freak accident when a large security gate fell on her at a Rita's Water Ice in Brewerytown. Police identify the girl as Wynter Larkin of Yeadon, Pa. It happened around 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rita's located at 2829 West Girard Avenue. Alison Brady was across the street and saw it all happen. "It was more than a thud. It was a big bang, some people thought it was a gunshot," said Brady. "We saw the awning laying on the ground but didn't realize there was a baby under the awning until the mother started screaming," said Tracey Standford. Friends say 3-year-old Wynter was with her mother Cheryl at an annual fundraiser at Rita's for the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. That's when the gate, which weighs approximately 2,000 pounds, fell and crushed the toddler. Witnesses say as many as 20 or more men struggled to lift the gate and hold it in the air. "The gentleman from Omega Psi Phi were holding the awning up and the little girl was on the ground and they were trying to resuscitate her," said Kealy Dangerfield Enlow. It's not an awning it's a security screen or seige gate. The building on the right has a similar one. Very obscure accident.

I used to frequent Ocean City, NJ in previous years. They have Rita's stores there on the boardwalk. Not bad stuff, but I think the Polish Water Ice is tastier. But a significant number of the stores there on the boards have those roll-down security doors. All the ones I've seen have a safety lock on them. With those, you can lock the door open, partial-open, or closed. I've never heard of one falling unexpectedly like this. It's a damn shame that it happened at all, but it's tragic that such a sweet, young life was taken as well.  |

I see she was young and I know a lot of you have a thing for kids and animals not dying on here, but something about the photo tells me she would have grown into a complete mong. The lord works in mysterious ways for sure.
