Actor Sir Michael Gambon has died peacefully in hospital aged 82 following a bout of pneumonia, his family revealed today.

He began his 60-year career treading the boards with Sir Laurence Olivier and was much-loved with younger audiences as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies.

A statement on behalf of his wife Lady Gambon and son Fergus Gambon, issued by publicist Clair Dobbs, said: 'We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon.

Ahhh, so that's the notification my phone just sent me. I barely glimpsed the name Michael Gambon and swiped left to dismiss before I'd even finished reading it.

I know he is best remembered as the wand-waving, nightgown wearing faegget from the Harry Potter movie series, but I remember him from the movie Gosford Park, where he played the philandering head of the household.
