Now back to the OP. Drilling equipment will need to be used to prove if there was ever life on mars, and we are at least 100 years away from doing that so we will never know.

Liquid water still flows on the surface on occasion, below ground and in the depths of the canyons, the noctis labyrinthis region especially. Remnant volcanic activity heats this water too.

Ergo there's certainly a large potential for underground reservoir aquifers like on Earth.
